چکیده

Therapeutic hypothermia improves clinical outcome in patients with global cerebral ischemia after cardiac arrest and in newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Hypothermia also seems promising in other cerebrovascular diseases, for example, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. In experimental models, the sooner hypothermia was initiated, the more distinctive neuroprotection was. Although clinical proof is still missing, experimental data supports the concept of prehospital induction of cooling. Induction methods should be easily applicable, transportable, safe, and effective in brain cooling. Head cooling devices seem suitable for this purpose. However, the results from the few published clinical trials evaluating cooling efficacy directly in the brain are conflicting. Theoretical evaluation indicates superiority of combined head and neck cooling compared with pure head cooling only. Hence, the Sovika cooling device (HVM Medical, Rotenburg, Germany) covering not only the head but also the anterior and dorsal neck seems promising. Two recent studies in healthy volunteers showed contradictory data regarding safety. Unfortunately, both trials were limited to monitoring peripheral temperatures only instead of the actual brain temperature. The aim of our study was to investigate whether the Sovika head and neck cooling device is effective in lowering brain temperature.

Design and construction of evaporative local cooling coatings and evaluate their efficiency in improving some perceptual indicators in laboratory conditions

Introduction: One way to reduce the level of heat strain is to use personal evaporative cooling coats. such as the wrist, ankle, head and neck. The purpose of this study is to design, construct, and determine the cooling power of local cooling coatings and evaluate their efficiency in improving perceptual indicators in the laboratory. Materials and Methods: Initially, the design and constructio...

Forced convective head cooling device reduces human cross-sectional brain temperature measured by magnetic resonance: a non-randomized healthy volunteer pilot study.

BACKGROUND This pilot study in five healthy adult humans forms the pre-clinical assessment of the effect of a forced convective head cooling device on intracranial temperature, measured non-invasively by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). METHODS After a 10 min baseline with no cooling, subjects received 30 min of head cooling followed by 30 min of head and neck cooling via a hood and nec...

Targeted brain hypothermia induced by an interstitial cooling device in the rat neck: Experimental study and model validation

Targeted brain hypothermia has the potential to prevent cerebral ischemia injury during open heart and neck surgeries or after traumatic head injury. In this study, in vivo experiments were performed to test the performance of a newly developed cooling device in an inexpensive animal model. Rat brain hypothermia was induced by inserting an interstitial cooling device in the rat neck muscle and ...

Passive Energy Air-to-Water Heat Pipe Based Heat Exchanger and its Potential of Air Pre-cooling in Air Conditioning Systems for Iran Climate

Air pre-cooling equipment is normally being employed in air-conditioning systems for pre-cooling the ambient outdoor air to enhance the air-conditioning systems performance. In this study, the potential of a passive water-to-air heat pipe based heat exchanger (HPHEX) for air pre-cooling purpose in air-conditioning systems for the high cooling load demanding regions of Iran was investigated. To ...
